Germany takes part in political prisoner solidarity marathon

Jour­nal­ists and cul­tur­al work­ers from Ger­many, Belarus, Eritrea, and Rus­sia gath­ered in Berlin’s cul­tur­al cen­ter.

Express­ing sol­i­dar­i­ty with Belaru­sian jour­nal­ists behind bars, the par­tic­i­pants held their por­traits. At the moment, over 30 media work­ers are incar­cer­at­ed in Belarus.

Orga­nized by the Weit­er Schreiben lit­er­ary plat­form and the Goethe Insti­tutein ex ile, the event includ­ed a meet­ing between Sabi­na Bri­lo (Belarus) and Yir­galem Fis­se­ha Mebrah­tu (Eritrea), both jour­nal­ists and poets. The authors share a sim­i­lar fate: dic­ta­tor­ship in their home coun­tries and life in exile.

As part of the Weit­er Schreiben, the poets wrote let­ters to each oth­er, exchang­ing views on the dra­mat­ic human rights sit­u­a­tion in their coun­tries. The writ­ing was full of pain, suf­fer­ing, and fear.

The marathon of sol­i­dar­i­ty with the jour­nal­ists of Belaru­sian polit­i­cal pris­on­ers was launched on May 3 in Vil­nius by a joint action of the BAJ and the Lithuan­ian Union of Jour­nal­ists.

Fin­land, Swe­den, Den­mark, and oth­er coun­tries have already joined the call.
