Germany takes part in political prisoner solidarity marathon
Former political prisoners say that every word of support they received was empowering and very inspiring. That is why a solidarity marathon with imprisoned journalists is so important. This time, a solidarity event was held in Berlin.
Journalists and cultural workers from Germany, Belarus, Eritrea, and Russia gathered in Berlin’s cultural center.
Expressing solidarity with Belarusian journalists behind bars, the participants held their portraits. At the moment, over 30 media workers are incarcerated in Belarus.
Organized by the Weiter Schreiben literary platform and the Goethe Institutein ex ile, the event included a meeting between Sabina Brilo (Belarus) and Yirgalem Fisseha Mebrahtu (Eritrea), both journalists and poets. The authors share a similar fate: dictatorship in their home countries and life in exile.
As part of the Weiter Schreiben, the poets wrote letters to each other, exchanging views on the dramatic human rights situation in their countries. The writing was full of pain, suffering, and fear.
