EU politicians and diplomats, along with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, join Marathon of Solidarity with Imprisoned Journalists
At a seminar dedicated to supporting the freedom of the Belarusian media and initiated by the embassies of Ireland, Finland, and Norway in Lithuania, a solidarity picture was taken. The imprisoned journalists and their relatives received high-level support from the Belarusian democratic leader, EU politicians, and diplomats.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Survila, and Irish Minister for European Affairs and Defense Peter Burke raised portraits of jailed journalists during the event. Other reporters, human rights advocates, and diplomats joined the solidarity action.
The BAJ started the solidarity marathon that has lasted for over six months and has received support from many countries worldwide. This event is the highest point of the BAJ’s efforts. The Belarusian government has been reminded that the journalists won’t be forgotten, even after being locked up.
It is not the first time Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has participated in the Solidarity Marathon. During the Tutaka Awakening Festival held in Poland in the summer of 2023, she supported Andrei Aliaksandrau.
“I am taking part in the marathon in solidarity with Belarusian journalists because I share the pain of the parents, children, and relatives of these brave people,” said Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. “They are real professionals, that’s why they have suffered from the actions of the regime. Every day of their life in prison means their plans unfulfilled, their children not hugged, tears in the eyes of their family members. Together we can bring the day of freedom for all political prisoners in Belarus closer. Let’s fight for the truth! Let’s stay together!”
BAJ calls on journalists around the world to support the solidarity action! You can print portraits of imprisoned Belarusian media workers, take pictures with them in outstanding places in your city (outside Belarus) and post them on social media using the hashtags #СвабодуЖурналістам and #BecauseTheJournalist. Don’t forget to send them to office@baj.media or intercomm@baj.media.
