  • Mother of imprisoned journalist Larysa Shchyrakova dies

Larysa Shchyrakova’s mother was 80 years old. She had a severe form of COVID-19 last year and suffered many complications. In her last months she could not move by herself and was bedridden. Larysa’s father, 88, took care of her, RFE/RL Belarus reported.

The former journalist was arrested in Homel on December 6, 2022. Her son Sviataslau was sent to a children’s home until his father came to take him out of the system.

Larysa Shchyrakova is accused of “discrediting the Republic of Belarus”. It is known that another criminal article was added to the charge. However, the lawyer has signed a non-disclosure agreement, so the charges are unknown. The case has already been sent to the court for consideration. On May 30, Larysa had her first visit with her son in Homel prison.
