Human rights activists say journalist Henadz Mazheika has been released

Mazhei­ka was removed from the cur­rent list of polit­i­cal pris­on­ers. Vias­na lists his release date as Novem­ber 23, 2023.

The cir­cum­stances of his release are unknown, but accord­ing to Pozirk’s cal­cu­la­tions, he most like­ly com­plet­ed his sen­tence.

On 23 March 2023, Min­sk City Court sen­tenced Kom­so­mol­skaya Prav­da cor­re­spon­dent Henadz Mazhei­ka to three years in prison for “incit­ing enmi­ty” against pub­lic offi­cials.

Henadz Mazhei­ka was arrest­ed on the night of Octo­ber 2, 2022, fol­low­ing the pub­li­ca­tion of an arti­cle about Andrei Zeltser, who was killed in a shootout with KGB agents dur­ing a raid on his apart­ment.

The Belaru­sian Min­istry of Infor­ma­tion blocked access to Kom­so­mol­skaya Prav­da’s kp.by web­site. Accord­ing to the agency, the deci­sion was made because the news­pa­per pub­lished infor­ma­tion that could “pose a threat to nation­al secu­ri­ty”.
