Human rights activists say journalist Henadz Mazheika has been released
Journalist Henadz Mazheika has been released from prison. This follows from the information posted on the website of the Viasna Human Rights Center.
Mazheika was removed from the current list of political prisoners. Viasna lists his release date as November 23, 2023.
The circumstances of his release are unknown, but according to Pozirk’s calculations, he most likely completed his sentence.
On 23 March 2023, Minsk City Court sentenced Komsomolskaya Pravda correspondent Henadz Mazheika to three years in prison for “inciting enmity” against public officials.
Henadz Mazheika was arrested on the night of October 2, 2022, following the publication of an article about Andrei Zeltser, who was killed in a shootout with KGB agents during a raid on his apartment.
The Belarusian Ministry of Information blocked access to Komsomolskaya Pravda’s kp.by website. According to the agency, the decision was made because the newspaper published information that could “pose a threat to national security”.
