«Extremist» media to lose Belarusian domain names
A number of independent publications have already been included in the list of "extremist organizations" based exclusively on a decision of the State Security Committee, and now the authorities have decided to deprive the editorial offices of their Belarusian domain names.
The Belarusian Association of Journalists was informed of the recent initiative of the Presidential Operational Analytical Center to cancel the domain name registration of a popular publication, allegedly due to «failure to verify» the personal details of its owners. The hosting company, at the request of the OAC, asked the website owner to confirm their personal information by showing up at the company’s office.
BAJ points out that the requirement to submit information in person is not stipulated by legal regulations. Despite this and other procedural violations, the OAC decided to cancel the resource’s domain name registration record on the basis of the letter and internal instructions. The agency did not even go to court to do this.
The management of the newsroom tried to challenge the legality of this step but was unsuccessful in getting it canceled.
