Andrzej Poczobut awarded Jan Karski Mission Medal
Journalist Andrzej Poczobut, sentenced to 8 years in prison, has been awarded the Polish Jan Karski Mission Medal, reports Belsat.
According to the TV channel, in this way, the Jan Karski Society expressed solidarity with the imprisoned journalist. The decision to award him with the medal comes as a reaction to the pressure Andrzej Poczobut faces in the Navapolatsk correctional facility. A few days ago, it became known that Poczobut had been sent to a secure housing unit for six months.
The Jan Karski Mission Medal and certificate will be given to Andrzej Poczobut’s family.
The medal was established in honor of Jan Karski, a Polish political figure and participant in the resistance movement. During World War II, Karski documented the mass extermination of the Jewish population by the Nazi regime in occupied territory. He was honored as Righteous Among the Nations for his work in exposing the truth about the Holocaust.
Andrzej Poczobut was detained in March 2021 in Grodno. In 2023 the sentence was announced – 8 years of imprisonment. On June 21 it became known that the political prisoner was transferred to Navapolatsk Correctional Facility No. 1.
