  • BAJ website censored in Russia

The Roskomnadzor consumer watchdog has blocked access to several Russian, Belarusian, and Ukrainian websites on the grounds of military censorship. The list includes the website of the Belarusian Association of Journalists.

According to the human rights project OVD News, the list of blocked websites includes the websites of the St. Petersburg editorial office of Novaya Gazeta, the mirror site of Svobodnye Media, the Ukrainian website Istorichna Pravda, Radio Liberty’s Votvot project, as well as the websites of the Belarusian Association of Journalists and the Homel-based Flagshtok media.

Earlier, the Belarusian authorities recognized the information products of the above-mentioned Belarusian sites as “extremist materials”.

According to Roskomnadzor, the blockade began on June 17.

Due to state pressure, there is hardly any critical online media in Russia that is not blocked by Roskomnadzor. As a result, Russian users are increasingly forced to use VPNs to get objective information.

At the same time, more and more media projects, including on Telegram and YouTube channels, emerge in exile.

At the beginning of the year, Roskomnadzor blocked the website of the Belarusian portal Reform.by in Russia. As a response, “cyber-guerrillas” hacked into the internal network of the Main Radio Frequency Center, which is part of the watchdog, and downloaded some 1.2 TB of data. It turned out that the Russian authorities closely monitor the Belarusian media sphere and interfere in the work of the independent Belarusian media.
