Imprisoned Radio Liberty journalist Ihar Losik allowed correspondence with his wife
RFE/RL Belarus reports that Ihar Losik, convicted in December 2021 to 15 years of imprisonment, received official permission to correspond with his wife Daria Losik, who is also in custody since 18 October 2022. Before the sentence was passed on to Daria, they were not allowed to exchange letters.
On 18 January, Daria Losik was sentenced to 2 years in prison for commenting on her husband’s case to Belsat TV, recognized as an extremist formation in Belarus. After the verdict, the administration of the correctional facility that holds Ihar Losik allowed him to correspond with his wife. However, it is still unknown whether the correspondence was allowed to Daria, since she is still kept in a pre-trial detention facility.
The couple has a four-year-old daughter Paulina, who is being taken care of by her grandparents. She misses her parents very much.
Meanwhile, Ihar’s grandfather died last weekend. The family hopes to visit Ihar in prison in March.
Losik was detained on 25 June 2020 after a search of his home in Baranavichy in connection with his blogging and journalistic work that had allegedly incited protests. On 14 December 2021, the journalist was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
